About Smit’s art
Smit’s subject matter is consistently figurative, with a preference for portraiture. According to Andrew Lamprecht (2013), each of Smith's works “offer us an entry point into the variety and richness that lies beneath every face we encounter in life, in bronze or in paint.”
Lionel Smit was born in 1982 in Pretoria and lives and works in Cape Town. Smit is considered one of South Africa’s youngest investment artists. Recent solo shows have taken place at Art India, Bowman Gallery, India (2012); 34 FineArt, Art Monaco ‘11, Monaco (2011); Kunstmuseum Bochum, Germany; Art Miami, USA and Saatchi Gallery, London (2010).
Smit's painting was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, where it received the Viewer’s Choice Award, as well as selected as the 'face' of the BP Portrait Award 2013 for all campaigns. He was recently honoured with a Ministerial Award from the Department of Culture for Visual Art and a highlight of his career has been the publication of one of his paintings on the cover of Christie’s Auction Catalogue.
